How to prevent iPhone from turning off in low power mode

Apple introduced the iPhone’s Low Power Mode in 2015 through the iOS 9 update. The feature lets you save battery life by reducing the amount of energy your iPhone uses. Battery Saver mode can also extend the battery life of your iPhone between charges. But if there’s one issue that iPhone owners have been critical of since the feature’s introduction, it’s that Power Saver mode automatically turns off once the iPhone is 80 percent charged.

Thankfully, you can use a quick trick to prevent your iPhone from going out of Low Power mode again. The same works for iPads, as they run on similar operating systems.

What happens when you turn on Low Power mode

When you enable Battery Saver mode, you’re essentially reducing the capabilities of your iPhone or iPad. This means not taking full advantage of some useful features. Here are the features you turn off when you enable Battery Saver mode, according to Apple:

  • 5G (except video streaming) on iPhone 12 models
  • Auto lock (defaults to 30 seconds)
  • Display brightness
  • Display refresh rate (limited up to 60Hz) on iPhone and iPad models with ProMotion displays
  • Some visual effects
  • iCloud Photos (temporarily paused)
  • Automatic downloads
  • Email recovery
  • Background app refresh

Should You Keep Your iPhone in Low Power Mode Permanently?

I see no reason to continuously use Low Battery mode on my iPhone 14 Pro. The device is practically new and the battery life is stellar. I don’t even recharge my phone every night. Instead, I only plug it in when the battery dies.

But I remember using Low Power Mode with older models. I generally started using the feature after it was clear I needed a new battery or a new phone. Even some early iOS betas that drained my battery convinced me to use the feature.

Some iPhone users may want to keep their phones in low power mode all the time. Maybe they don’t need any of the above features. Or maybe they have old batteries that need fixing, but are putting off the trip to the Apple Store.

Others may simply want to extend the battery life of their devices and charge them less frequently. Whatever the reason, there’s a problem. When you charge your iPhone beyond 80%, Low Power Mode turns off automatically. This is where the following trick comes in handy.

Prevent power saving mode from turning off

I have experimented with the Automation characteristic of Shortcuts app recently, realizing that there is a lot of untapped potential. And I discovered the automation you would like to enable to prevent iOS from turning off Low Power mode. I’m probably not the first to do this, and longtime iPhone users familiar with iOS may already know this trick.

You will force the iPhone into Low Power mode the moment it is turned off. This means that you will never be able to turn off Energy Saver mode unless you turn off the automation.

Here’s how to create automation in the Shortcuts app:

  1. Open the Shortcuts app
  2. Click the Automation menu
  3. Click the + sign in the upper right corner
  4. Click the Create personal automation button
  5. Scroll for the Low power mode option
  6. Choose the it’s off option
  7. Faucet Next
  8. Search the Set to low power mode script and have the file Tour AND ON selected options
  9. Faucet Next
  10. Disable the Ask before you run to alternate
  11. Faucet Done

Once done, the automation will prevent your iPhone from turning off Low Power mode. You can disable Automation if and when you need to take full advantage of iPhone features that iOS turns off once Battery Saver mode is enabled. You’ll do this from the automation menu itself, something you’ll need to remember if you want to use this trick.

As you can see below, I have automation saved, but it’s currently disabled:

As long as automation is enabled, there’s no way to turn off Energy Saver mode. The Control Center shortcut will not work. And when your phone charges over 80%, it will stay in Low Power mode.
