Protecting Medical Internet of Things Assets: Asimily and HANDLE Global are collaborating for healthcare systems

The IoT branch of the Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) covers a lot of ground, as far as healthcare system technologies are concerned. This includes (but is certainly not limited to) platforms for telehealth virtual consultations (which reduce the need for physical office visits), assistive technology such as smart hearing aids or vision aids, smart implants such as pacemakers, insulin pumps or neurostimulators integrated with IoT capabilities for patient data transmission, other remote patient monitoring devices (such as smart health monitors and comfortable wearables), and of course broader community applications such as smart hospitals (i.e. environments that include smart beds, automated sanitation and real-time medical equipment tracking).

Projected to grow 32% by 2026, MIoT is expected to reach $447 billion as the connected medical device market flourishes.

The version in short? Healthcare systems have access to ever more innovative technologies, thanks to the advances made in MIoT. New levels of interconnectivity between MIoT devices and instrumental equipment are directly impacting the effectiveness of healthcare workers and life-saving patient outcomes.

Unfortunately, not everything in MIoT is a breath of fresh air. Sometimes it’s a gasp; due to expanded connectivity, more entry points can be exploited by attackers with attack-based intentions. A pacemaker that transmits vital data to a patient’s doctor can, with zero exceptions, become hackable, for example. It could be scary.

Thus, capital decision-makers depend on the up-to-date information on cybersecurity threats provided by MIoT experts so that security, maintenance and asset replacement become a well-run machine, so to speak. Yet many medical institutions lack this; the lack of a comprehensive medical device risk reduction strategy is worrying, and health data breaches must be prevented.

Enter Amily and MANEGGI Global. The former, a risk management platform dedicated to protecting connected MIoT devices from ransomware, malware and more. And then the latter, a software solution for healthcare capital based on artificial intelligence.

Earlier this morning, Asimily and HANDLE Global announced a new integration built to optimize entire MIoT capital cycles to protect patients and improve overall device procurement and management processes.

By integrating Asimily’s AI-powered risk analytics capabilities with the HANDLE Global Capital Cycle Management (CCM) platform, a single platform is provided where healthcare, security and IT supply chain teams gain visibility into holistic and always updated on the MIoT of organizations – connected goods.

This visibility is key. When healthcare professionals across all departments can quickly see which assets or manufacturers may fall into a risk category for cybersecurity issues, the necessary preventative steps can be taken to avoid cyberattacks. With this integration, cyber related alerts and recalls can even be tracked and correlated to any applicable use case within a medical environment.

As Peter Hancock, VP of Global Partnerships at Asimily described, proactivity within MIoT cybersecurity is top priority.

“This affects product standardization and, more importantly, patient safety,” Hancock said. “As security threats against healthcare systems increase, teams’ understanding and prioritization of equipment risk profiles need to be thorough. This not only helps avoid the kind of attacks that are costly to budgets and reputations, but also to the peace of mind of patients undergoing medical travel. That’s why we’re proud to partner with HANDLE Global, a leader in the healthcare capital equipment supply chain. This is an addition that we anticipate healthcare systems will find unique and particularly valuable.”
