Prerequisites for using the NameDrop function in iOS 17
Although the NameDrop feature was announced with iOS 17, it was not available in iOS 17 Developer Beta 1. However, with the release of iOS 17 Developer Beta 2, you can now use NameDrop on your iPhone. That said, here are a few things to keep in mind before proceeding any further:
- To use NameDrop, make sure both iPhones have iOS 17 Developer Beta 2 installed.
- The NameDrop feature works using the NFC chip, so the idea is to make sure the tops of the iPhones (where you see the earpiece and front-facing camera) are closest to each other. You can bring the top half of the two phones close together or place one phone on top of the other.
- Since iOS 17 is currently in beta, the NameDrop feature may not work as expected at times. You may need to turn on AirDrop or lock/unlock your iPhone screen for it to work.
1. On both iPhones, swipe down from the top right to open Control Center.
2. Touch and hold the network lock (where Wi-Fi, mobile data and airplane mode are displayed) and .
3. Tap the AirDrop icon and choose All for 10 minutes.
4. Now bring the two iPhones together. You’ll see a glowing animation on the top half of both iPhones.
5. Contact posters in iOS 17 (if created) will appear on both iPhones. You can choose to Share or receive only.
6. If you want to share contact details, tap Share and the other person could choose Receive only to get your information or Share if you want to share your contact details too.
7. If you only want to receive contact details but don’t want to share yours, tap the Receive only button.
8. Contact details including email address, phone number, contact poster and other information will be shared between devices.
9. Finally, tap Done to save the received contact data. You can too edit the received contact.
If you’ve shared contact details once, you’ll see an AirDrop notification at the top when you try to use NameDrop again. When you tap the notification, you’ll see the contact card. With the NameDrop feature, iOS 17 Developer Beta 2 also brings support for touching the two iPhones to share files via AirDrop. So, if AirDrop doesn’t show up on nearby devices next time, you can hold the top of your iPhone close to another iPhone for AirDrop files.
